Our Location

We are based in Derby in the heart of the United Kingdom. Not only has Derby got excellent transportation and logistics links, but it shares its location with the world’s first factory. In 1777 John Lombe built England’s first silk throwing mill on an island in the River Derwent, close to Pennine’s site today. The Silk Mill empowered the City, forever forging its reputation for innovation and resourcefulness. The banks of the river became the hotbed of the Industrial Revolution, and is now a World Heritage site.

Derby emerged as an engineering and railway centre, and a century later, Derby’s history of ‘firsts’ continued when the City built the world’s first Roundhouse- to facilitate the servicing of locomotives, now described as the NASA of its time. In the 20th century, Derby’s reputation for innovation, engineering excellence and a positive ‘can do’ attitude, attracted a multitude of world class engineering giants. These included Rolls Royce, Bombardier, Toyota and JCB which all contributed to making Derby the most hi-tech city outside of London.

Pennine is proud to be part of this culture of innovation, manufacturing and engineering, and enjoys a high profile in the City as an employer of choice. Pennine is partnered with the City’s premier education providers, Derby College and the University of Derby. Training and personal development of staff is seen as integral to our success and working with high profile partners to enhance our team’s skills and expertise is critical.
